Invisible Braces

One of our most highly sought after treatments in London are the Invisalign braces. They are frequently chosen over metal braces as they are far more comfortable, more hygienic and less disruptive, but above all they are near invisible.

Have a dental emergency in a hurry? We can help take care of your teeth in London

What do you do if you have a dental emergency over the holidays? We’ve gathered together our top 5 emergency dental FAQs – bookmark this page! Whether you’ve got swollen gums or your child has chipped a tooth, a dental emergency can threaten to spoil Christmas for everyone. Don’t let it! We’re here to arm you with the information you need to take the situation in hand and do the right thing while getting the help you need. BROKEN TOOTH Bitten down too hard on a kernel of fancy festive popcorn? The treatment of your chipped or fractured tooth will depend on the degree of its injury, but you should see a dentist straight away. Don’t worry, as it’s usually easy to restore a damaged tooth and we might even be able to do it in a single visit. Call us for an urgent appointment and, in the meantime, try to avoid biting in that area or eating hot or cold foods. KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH Did the battle over the turkey drumsticks come to fisticuffs? If a blow or fall knocks one or more of your teeth out, you should recover it and remove any dirt or debris by gently rinsing it. To protect the fibres on the root surface, avoid handling the root. Your tooth will have a better chance of survival if you can keep it in its socket until you can get emergency dental treatment. If that’s not possible, put it in a cup of milk. If the tooth is simply pushed out of place, don’t force it back into its socket, just apply light finger pressure to reposition it to its normal alignment. Use a moist tissue or gauze to hold the tooth in its place and call us immediately. TOOTHACHE OR SWOLLEN GUMS Are your teeth or gums causing you more pain than Uncle Nigel’s bad jokes? There are a number of reasons for toothache and swollen gums, but it’s most often down to infection. Painkillers may help you feel more comfortable but don’t rely on them instead of seeing the dentist, as they allow more time for the infection to spread. If the pain has become worse over time, use warm water or a specialist mouthwash to rinse your mouth. You may also choose to gently floss or use a waterpick to remove any food that might cause infection. Call us immediately so we can assess the cause and help solve the underlying problem. LOST FILLING OR CROWN Did your nan’s Christmas cake pull your crown off with it? At Christmas, the only crown we’d want you to be taking off is the paper kind. If eating sticky foods pulls one out, or loosens a filling, then you’ll need to come in and see us. A loose crown should be saved so we can re-cement it as soon as possible, as long as it hasn’t been damaged. If a filling falls out, remove it from your mouth to avoid swallowing or choking on it. You won’t need to save it as it will be replaced with a new one. BITTEN LIP OR TONGUE Biting your tongue over your granddad’s views on Brexit? Christmas banter can be treacherous! If you’re in pain after biting your lip or tongue by accident (or on purpose), apply a cold compress to the inside of your mouth to reduce the swelling. If you can’t stop the bleeding with a compress, and are losing blood, you may need to visit your closest A&E to get stitches. Call 111 for advice. We hope you’ll have safe and happy Christmas and New Year celebrations, but if something does happen, then hopefully you’ll now have a better idea what to do. Bookmark this blog post and program our number into your phone for rapid reference. And share this with friends and family, so they can be prepared too! Best Dentist When should my child start visiting a dentist?   Following the guidance of the British Dental Society dental check-up before their first birthday.  We are also on hand for dietary advice (especially on the intake of sugars) and proper oral care recommendations. The journey to a life of healthy teeth and gums starts even before your child requires dental care.  The relationship between your child and their dentist is just as important as their level of skill and expertise.  Discuss your own dental visits with your child to dispel the myths and stereotypical “fears” associated with dentistry.  If they see you smiling after a dental visit, they are likely to do the same! Top tips for baby teeth   Baby teeth function as “placeholders” for your child’s permanent teeth, and if a baby tooth is lost too early it can cause permanent teeth to grow into the empty space, making it difficult for other teeth to find room.  This could lead to a variety of future dental issues such as tooth decay, gum disease and abnormal wear of tooth surfaces to name a few. Did you know that baby teeth are just as susceptible to cavities as adult teeth? Start brushing your child’s teeth twice a day as soon as they emerge using a very thin film of high fluoride toothpaste (no less than 1,000 ppm / parts per million).  Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by protecting the tooth against bacteria and sugars in the mouth. Although important that your child spits out the toothpaste, it is not necessary for them to rinse with water so that the excess fluoride can continue to protect their teeth. Should my child be seeing an orthodontist?   Depending on the needs of your child, the age at which treatment may be undertaken can vary.  Orthodontic treatment is generally carried out once all the adult teeth have emerged, however in certain cases early intervention can minimise or even avoid future orthodontic treatment.  As a rule, around the age of 8 is an appropriate time for your child to be assessed by our specialist orthodontist who works closely with all our dentists. Keep it going!   At The Dental Surgery we believe the key to lifelong good oral health starts with proper education, at an early age, on how to look after your own teeth and recognise any signs of declining oral health.  During your child’s first and subsequent check-ups, our team of dentists, hygienists and specialists will spend time showing them proper brushing and flossing techniques, providing dietary advice (such as being aware of their sugar intake) and preventative treatment where necessary (such as fissure sealants, topical fluoride applications and oral hygiene vists).  We aim to make their appointments positive and something to look forward to.

Have a dental emergency in a hurry? We can help take care of your teeth in London

Cosmetic Dentistry began in the 1930’s when a Californian Dentist improved the smiles of the Hollywood stars. Over the decades techniques have improved and developed in cosmetic dentistry. Porcelain veneers, thin layers of porcelain, are bonded to the surface of broken, misshapen and discloured teeth to create beautiful smiles. The porcelain available now can mimic the beauty of natural enamel allowing full control of the colour of the final result. The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry was set up in 2003 to provide guidance and education to dentists interested in providing cosmetic dentistry and to provide patients a useful resource to gain information on what is possible in cosmetic dentistry. Dr Dentist is the Past President of the Academy. He has been at the forefront of Cosmetic Dentistry for many years, lecturing throughout the world specifically on the use of computers in creating restorations such as crowns and veneers. Dr Caplan is now able to produce a smile makeover in a day. This is very unusual, as most dentists would require the help of a Dental Technician to produce porcelain veneers. Dr Dentist uses a system called dentistry that uses computer aided design and manufacture (CadCam) to create porcelain dental restorations. The process involves scanning the mouth with a highly accurate specialized camera that creates a virtual 3-D image of the scanned mouth on a computer. The teeth to have veneers or crowns are chosen on the screen and various design tools are used to create a virtual porcelain restoration. This is then used to mill a porcelain block shaded to match the patient’s teeth to create porcelain restorations within a few minutes. These porcelain restorations are then characterized and glazed in a porcelain oven, similar to glazing pottery, producing a beautiful life-like porcelain restoration. These are then immediately bonded to the existing teeth. Within a few hours a patient can have their smile transformed. The Cerec system can be used to treat Damaged teeth Severely discoloured teeth Worn teeth Spaces between teeth Crowded teeth Denture stabilisation is a rather clever treatment which saves denture users from the embarrassment and inconvenience of slipping dentures. Following an initial consultation, you’ll undergo a procedure whereby four small screws (overdenture implants) are inserted into your jaw. The procedure takes only an hour, can be performed under local anaesthetic, and will leave your dentures as stable and firm as natural teeth. Problem All teeth missing Loose, uncomfortable or poorly fitting conventional complete denture Solutions Implant supported fixed or removable complete arch bridge Two principal options: permanently fixed and clip-retained Both options support the bridge, so that it is not resting on the gums Acrylic bridge supported by implants Looks and functions just like natural teeth Combines the security of permanent fixing with the connivence of removable dentures Solid foundation for natural chewing function, but easily removable for cleaning Bridge made from the same material as a conventional denture Implant-supported permanently fixed porcelain bridge Looks and functions like natural teeth Only removable by a dentist, for cleaning or extraction of trapped oral debris The most expensive option for patients with no teeth Removable (clip-retained) denture Looks like natural teeth and can be removed for cleaning Some movement during normal chewing, due to necessary slack in securing clips Alternatives Continue with a complete conventional denture Initially, cheaper than an implant-supported restoration Continuing impairment of eating, speech, confidence Bone supporting the gum beneath the denture will shrink due to lack of use Denture will need to be regularly relined or replaced The pressure form an unsupported conventional denture during chewing reduces the blood supply to the gums and contributes to accelerated bone shrinkage through resorption Dental Practice The heart of our practice is maintaining a healthy relationship between patients and their teeth. Consequently, we offer general dental services designed to keep things as healthy as possible and nip larger issues in the bud before they get worse. We perform very thorough examinations and check-ups with photographs and X-rays which allow us to detect any areas of concern and we will discuss these with you. If required, we will perform extractions, place fillings, inlays, crowns or bridges always ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and pain-free as possible during the procedure. We take just as much pride in this ‘bread and butter’ dental work as we do in our most cutting-edge treatments. The real advantage to working in a practice with specialists from all the different dental disciplines is that we can take a team approach where necessary.
