Fillings are a wonderfully effective way to repair teeth that have been damaged, either due to injury or decay.

We use a number of different kinds of fillings, such as: composite (white) fillings, amalgam (silver) fillings, and porcelain fillings. During your visit, we’ll discuss the different types with you, and help you choose the one that suits you best.

Composite (white) fillings are made from natural tooth coloured resins that are more aesthetically pleasing and can be matched to the same colour as natural teeth.

Amalgam (silver) fillings are made from an amalgamation of different metals and are silver in appearance. Amalgam fillings are resistant to wear; however, due to their colour they are more noticeable than composite fillings and are not usually used in very visible areas, such as front teeth.

Porcelain fillings are called inlays or onlays and are made by a technician in a dental laboratory and then bonded to the tooth. They can be matched to the colour of the tooth, resist staining, and are extremely durable.

Finally, your dentist will discuss with you the dental treatment options available and provide you with a suggested dental treatment plan.

Dentist Surgeon Keep smiling Here at The Dental Surgery we believe in tailoring treatment to suit your individual situation and needs, we consider your dental health along with your desired results to plan the best treatment for you. As medical professionals, we place emphasis on prevention and early intervention. One of the diseases we are determined to prevent is tooth decay (cavities). If we spot tooth decay (a cavity), we aim to prevent progression by removing the decayed part of the tooth and replacing it with a restorative dental material. The choice of material is based largely on the size of the cavity, smaller cavities can be filled with a direct filling material placed in a single visit while larger cavities may require a coverage restoration (such as a crown) which protects the tooth from further fracture. Fillings are mostly used to restore the natural shape and function of teeth that display minor erosion due to decay (cavities).  If left untreated, cavities can lead to infections or an abscess of the tooth, and even multiple tooth loss. When a tooth has become functionally compromised and is likely to breakdown or fracture despite our best efforts with a filling material, then a crown may be the best option for the tooth.  The advantage of a crown is that the entire tooth is protected and stabilised.  Modern materials and our talented technicians allow us to create or recreate the desired aesthetics to a phenomenal degree of accuracy not only in terms of shape but also colour. When a tooth is missing and the adjacent teeth need to be crowned (see crown section) then it may be that a bridge which is supported by the adjacent teeth is the best way to replace the missing tooth. If one or more teeth are missing, or if the structure of the tooth is severely compromised, you may be a suitable candidate for dental implants as they offer more stability and a better prognosis than conventional treatments in such situations. A holistic approach Taking the time to actively listen to our patients helps us to understand their expectations and how they wish to be treated, and allows us to help them achieve their optimum oral health.  Our dentists, hygienist and specialists all work alongside one another and personally take patients from one surgery to the next when appointments are linked so that we can relay any important information and ensure you experience a continuous and consistent level of care. Transparency in treatment We endeavour to put you in control of your treatment at all times by explaining what we discover with easy to understand terminology and showing you your intra-oral pictures and X-rays to highlight any aspects of concern.  Before treatment is undertaken you will be provided with all the available options and a treatment plan outlining costs and steps to be taken Pain management With your permission, there are various methods and techniques we can use to alleviate dental anxiety and pain.  Dependent on your tolerance and sensitivity we can use numbing agents (topical for tenderness) or sedatives (by injection for nerve sensitivity) during treatment at no additional cost. Catch up on TV shows or listen to your favourite music during treatment, while always being able to alert the dentist or hygienist if you are experiencing discomfort in which case they will stop immediately. At The Dental Surgery, we are all dedicated to changing your dental experience for the better. Invisible Braces

How To Get The Best Dental Care in Finsbury Avenue London

Invisible Braces Professional teeth whitening with a gentle touch We have recently introduced professional whitening kits with a lower percentage whitening agent, specially formulated to help people who suffer from sensitivity to whiten their teeth. The unique 5% Carbamide Peroxide formula of our White Dental Beauty Mild enables the same bleaching results as a standard 10% CP gel when applied for 2 hours a day, resulting in less overall sensitivity. Independent studies* show: The same shade results were achieved with White Dental Beauty Mild 5% CP, when compared to a product of 10% CP gel. There was less sensitivity recorded using White Dental Beauty Mild 5% CP, immediately after treatment, than with a product of 10% CP gel. The sensitivity recordings after a 3 month period were the same with both products. *(Studies in progress) How can we help whiten your sensitive teeth This mild formula incorporates NOVON®, an exclusive patented technology that accelerates whitening action in a safe and effective way that is kind to teeth. The high water content of this product further helps prevent dehydration of the teeth which is one of the main causes of sensitivity. For extreme sensitivity, we recommend placing a small amount of toothpaste for sensitive teeth or tooth mousse in your custom whitening trays and using this intermittently with your whitening treatment. If you are considering whitening your teeth but cannot face the pain of sensitive teeth, speak to one of our dentists about this product in your next appointment, or give us a call and we can help tailor a mild whitening treatment plan that cares for your teeth.   Congratulations, you’re expecting a baby! So, what can you expect in terms of your dental health over the next nine months? Read on to find out! Did you know that more babies are born in September than any other month? Counting back nine months, that tells us that January is the time of year when more women get pregnant than any other time. So, if you’ve just learned you’re having a baby, you’re definitely not alone! Pregnancy is an exciting time and you’re probably trying to learn all you can about how to care for your baby once they arrive. But for now, we’re concerned with looking after your own dental health in pregnancy. It’s not the first thing most people think of, but pregnancy brings changes that affect your entire body – including your mouth. Morning sickness This is unfortunately very common, especially during the first trimester. If you are being sick, try to avoid brushing your teeth for at least 30 minutes after you have vomited as they will be covered in stomach acids and the brushing action may cause damage to the enamel on your teeth. In the meantime, rinsing your mouth with plain water will help remove some of the acids and take away the nasty taste. Feeling nauseous also tempts many women to skip brushing their teeth, particularly the back ones as it can make them feel sick. To help to reduce this gag reflex, try using a smaller toothbrush, perhaps one suitable for a small child, and brush at a time of day when you feel less nauseous. It doesn’t have to be first thing in the morning, but remember to try to brush twice daily and definitely before you go to bed at night. Pregnancy gingivitis Many mums-to-be experience bleeding gums; this is known as pregnancy gingivitis. This is not a cause for alarm, as it’s caused by the hormonal changes in your body. The increase in hormones can inflame your gums if plaque is allowed to accumulate on them, resulting in bleeding. It’s important you continue to brush your teeth and gums thoroughly despite the bleeding. Try using a softer toothbrush and ensure you use a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Make sure you visit us during your pregnancy to monitor your gums and ensure there are no other issues to be concerned about. After you’ve had your baby and your hormone levels begin to return to normal, your bleeding gums should subside. Cravings One of the hallmarks of pregnancy is the sudden onset of strange cravings – the mythical pickles and ice cream! A majority of expectant mums admit to having cravings at some point during their pregnancy – a few even suffer from pica, or the urge to eat non-edible items such as paint chips or dirt! However, most seem to crave sweet foods. Obviously, foods with high levels of added sugar are harmful to teeth and may increase your risk of tooth decay, especially if eaten between meals. To reduce this risk, try to limit sweets and keep sweet foods and drinks to meal times only. If you do feel the need to snack between meals, choose healthier options such as cheese cubes, and drink plenty of water! Orthodontist
